Key points at a glance
- Separate a title edit from a new topic.
- Check local rules and deadlines.
- Obtain formal confirmation before switching.
Define the proposed change
A sharper title may still describe the same study. A new research question and subject may amount to a different topic. The real test is whether the approved project remains substantially the same, not how many words you edit in the title.
Do not borrow another university’s deadline
Example: A faculty may allow returning a topic only once within an early window. That rule does not apply everywhere. Read your own examination regulations and ask which form, approval and deadline apply.
Give a research reason
Briefly explain why the original scope is unworkable: lost data access, an overbroad question or new subject knowledge. Propose a feasible alternative and explain how it fits the remaining time.
Wait for the formal answer
Discuss the academic case with your supervisor, submit the request through the prescribed channel and keep confirmation. Check whether the deadline, examiner allocation or registered title changed. Do not silently work on a different topic.
Final submission context
Formal details can feel like a separate writing task, but they matter just as much for a printed submission. Anything missing, misplaced or inconsistently formatted in the document will also appear in the bound copy.
Use this guide together with your cover page, table of contents, page numbers, source notes and appendices. Prepare the final PDF for printing and binding only after the complete file has been checked.
Practical check before PDF export
- Do headings, chapter structure and page numbers match?
- Are sources, figures and tables included completely?
- Are required elements such as declarations, appendices or the cover page included where required?
- Did you open and check the final PDF after exporting it?

Common mistakes
- Confusing a title edit with a topic change.
