Set the scale direction
Before averaging items, they must point in the same conceptual direction. “I feel motivated” and “I avoid the task” point oppositely. Follow an established scale’s manual; grammatical negation alone does not prove an item needs reversing.
Check the recoding formula
Example: On a 1-to-5 scale, a genuinely reversed item becomes new value = 6 − old value. A 1 becomes 5 while a 3 remains 3. Missing values must stay missing; adjust the formula to the actual endpoints.

Create new variables and log old/new names, scale direction and formula. Inspect frequencies before and after and check a few cases manually. Only then calculate scale scores and, where appropriate, reliability.
Do not code away a wording problem
Negated or complex items can confuse respondents and weaken the scale. A weak association after correct recoding may indicate misunderstanding or a different construct. Do not drop an item merely to make alpha larger.

Formal details can feel like a separate writing task, but they matter just as much for a printed submission. Anything missing, misplaced or inconsistently formatted in the document will also appear in the bound copy.
