Key points at a glance
- Record each search separately.
- Keep dates and filters.
- Explain strategy revisions.
Treat each search as a reproducible step
For every database, capture platform, date, exact query and limits. “I searched for motivation” cannot be repeated. PRISMA-S sets out search reporting items for systematic reviews; a student project can adapt the level of detail to its actual review design.
Create a usable log row
Example: “ERIC, 4 Sep 2026, (student* AND feedback) AND motivation, peer reviewed, 2019–2026, 84 records”. Add which records were exported and when duplicates were removed. Preserve the syntax as the database actually interpreted it.
Record iterations rather than overwriting them
If a search is too broad or narrow, add a new dated run instead of silently replacing the first. Explain new synonyms, fields or limits. A log documents decisions but does not by itself prove that the search was exhaustive.
Connect methods to appendix
Explain database selection and overall approach in the methods section; place full queries in an appendix if permitted. Match reported counts to exported records and screening decisions. Consider a final update search before submission where appropriate.
Final submission context
Formal details can feel like a separate writing task, but they matter just as much for a printed submission. Anything missing, misplaced or inconsistently formatted in the document will also appear in the bound copy.
Use this guide together with your cover page, table of contents, page numbers, source notes and appendices. Prepare the final PDF for printing and binding only after the complete file has been checked.

- Do headings, chapter structure and page numbers match?
- Are sources, figures and tables included completely?
- Are required elements such as declarations, appendices or the cover page included where required?
- Did you open and check the final PDF after exporting it?
