Key points at a glance
- Describe the frame and recruitment.
- Do not call volunteer responses random.
- Limit population claims.
Name the selection mechanism
Probability sampling requires a defined population, a sampling frame and known nonzero selection chances. Convenience sampling uses people who are accessible or volunteer. A large number of voluntary answers does not make the selection random.
Describe recruitment transparently
Example: A survey link in three class chats reaches only members who notice it and choose to reply. Record channels, dates, eligibility and response. Call it a convenience sample even if the later analysis includes random variables.
Set the scope of inference
With a genuine probability sample, uncertainty for the target population can be estimated under further assumptions. With self-selection, relevant traits of nonrespondents may be unknown. Describe the achieved sample first and avoid easy claims about all students.
Improve the practical design
Define the target population and document whom you can actually reach. Several appropriate channels may reduce obvious imbalance but do not turn selection into probability sampling. Compare available sample characteristics with the target group.
Final submission context
Formal details can feel like a separate writing task, but they matter just as much for a printed submission. Anything missing, misplaced or inconsistently formatted in the document will also appear in the bound copy.
Use this guide together with your cover page, table of contents, page numbers, source notes and appendices. Prepare the final PDF for printing and binding only after the complete file has been checked.
Practical check before PDF export
- Do headings, chapter structure and page numbers match?
- Are sources, figures and tables included completely?
- Are required elements such as declarations, appendices or the cover page included where required?
- Did you open and check the final PDF after exporting it?
Checklist
- Target population defined.
- Recruitment logged.
- Self-selection considered.
- Inference matched to design.
Common mistakes
- Calling volunteers randomly selected.
- Equating sample size with representativeness.
- Ignoring unknown nonresponse.

Frequently asked questions
Is convenience sampling useless?
No. It can address a bounded question if selection limits are explicit.
Do many replies make it representative?
No. How people entered the sample also matters.
What is a sampling frame?
The list or structure from which members of the target population can be selected.
